Our organic basil is a herb from the mint family (Lamiaceae) that is essential in Italian cuisine, though it is also used in a variety of other cuisines, including Thai, Indonesian, and Vietnamese. It is known as the main ingredient in traditional pesto and is also a favorite seasoning for tomato-based pasta sauces. It has a sweet, aromatic scent and a peppery taste.

Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is native to Asia (India, Pakistan, Iran, Thailand) and grows wild in tropical and subtropical regions around the world. Due to its popularity, basil is often called the “king of herbs.” Basil has several derived names and beliefs associated with it. The common name basil may be derived from the Greek words basileus, meaning “king,” or basilikon, meaning “royal.” A Latin word, basiliscus, refers to the “basilisk,” a mythical fire-breathing dragon that was so repulsive it could kill with a single glance. According to Roman legend, basil is the antidote to the basilisk’s venom. The botanical name Ocimum is derived from the Greek meaning “aromatic being.”
